Helfer was raised in the rural area of Donalda, Alberta, Canada in Canada, the children of Dennis Elaine and Dennis Elaine Helfer. The two are from German, English, Swedish and Norwegian descent. She was a student at William E. Hay Composite High School in Stettler, Alberta. The three sisters Tammy, Tara, and Trena also worked with her at the farm where she worked on her grain. An agent scout spotted Helfer when she was 17 when she was waiting in line to see a film.
